fantasy art portraits I

Filraena by Jeremy Martinson
available for sale HERE

For this feature, the focus is on fantasy art portraits. According to Google dictionary a portrait is:

a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders.

Since a post of this nature focuses on fantasy art, the portrait may not necessarily be a person (can be a fairy or a hybrid person).

So much of the art that is submitted to our group focuses on portraits, therefor it seemed necessary to portray them here for the blog.

For part one of this post, the focus is primarily on digital art. Paintings will be featured in Part II of this post.

If you go to the link underneath a piece, you will find many kinds of prints available including metal prints, canvas prints, paper prints and even posters. In addition, many of these art pieces are featured on tote bags, greeting cards, pillows, tee shirts, phone cases, mugs, shower curtains and big beach towels.

Dragons profiles

Merlin's Dragon by Hartmut Jager
available for sale HERE

In a way this is a continuation of the first and second dragon posts.

The first was primarily about Western style dragons (the ones with wings). It also heavily focused on digital art, which a lot of fantasy artists use.

The second focused primarily on Eastern style dragons (the ones without wings, who are serpent-like and are sometimes portrayed in the water). This post was more about painting, and featured some renditions that were traditionally oriented, even if original.

This post focuses primarily on dragon profiles (mainly the head of the dragon), though the last piece in this post focuses on some parts of the body as well. The styles are drastically different from colorful painting to monochromatic digital art. It heavily features two artists, Julie Engelhardt and Ali Oppy because they tended to make more dragon portraiture than any of our other artists (at least in terms of dragons that haven't been featured on the blog before).

So first up is artist, Julie Engelhardt and her colorful paintings:

Next up is a heavily featured artist (and winner of many of our contests) from our group, Ali Oppy. She primarily does fantasy portraits of people, but she also delved into fantasy portraits of dragons:

Dragons (Part II)

Phoenix and Dragon by Rebecca Wang
available for sale HERE

In section II on dragons, I focus on Easter style dragons by the members of Fantasy Art for Home and Office (as opposed to the first section which primarily focused on western style dragons). Western style dragons have bat-like wings. Eastern style dragons do not have wings.

According to Wikipedia:

The Chinese dragon, with counterparts in Japan (namely the Japanese dragon), Korea and other East Asian and South Asian countries.[1] Most are depicted as serpentine creatures with above-average intelligence, and are quadrupeds (four legs and wingless) ...

... Dragons are often held to have major spiritual significance in various religions and cultures around the world. In many Asian cultures, dragons were, and in some cultures still are, revered as representative of the primal forces of nature, religion, and the universe. They are associated with wisdom—often said to be wiser than humans—and longevity. They are commonly said to possess some form of magic or other supernatural power, and are often associated with wells, rain, and rivers. In some cultures, they are also said to be capable of human speech. In some traditions dragons are said to have taught humans to talk ...
